Driven Steel Piling

Wagstaff Piling was engaged by CPB Samsung Dragados Joint Venture to supply and install 1500 No. Driven Steel piles comprising a mix of 310UC158’s and 350WC280’s up to 54m in length at the St Peter’s Interchange project in Sydney. The St Peter’s Interchange is a major part of the WestConnex project and provides the missing connection in Sydney’s orbital motorway network. Over 41,000 lineal metres of steel was supplied which was cast and prepared off-site with dedicated mill rolls and delivered with bevels and driving shoes in maximum 18m lengths. The piles were driven through the variable fill layer to the underlying bedrock and spliced on-site with a full penetration butt weld subject to a rigorous 100% ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing. The piles were installed using Banut driving rigs with hammers ranging from 5T to 10T and up to 3 service cranes were utilised for the significant splicing and welding operation. Over 170 PDA tests were undertaken by Wagstaff’s in-house testing department, PileTest, to confirm the capacity and integrity of the driven piles. Overall, the project was considered a success and underlined Wagstaff Piling’s expertise in the driven piling market.
